Course A — Description:
This course is designed to instruct the attendee as to the relationship of food to specific packaging in the retort pouch. Specific topics discussed include both properties of both food science and packaging development specific to the retort pouch. Contract packaging, thermal processing, seal technology, government regulations and military specs will be discussed when taken with Course B. It will provide the attendee the basics of retort pouch technology and package development, the essential parts of the retort pouch.

Dr. M. Magdy Hefnawy
Dr. Hefnawy is the President of Ag-Tech International, Inc. a Tennessee and New Jersey corporation established in 1989. Specialized in agriculture, food processing and nutrition, technology transfer/joint ventures, food plant engineering and machinery.

Dr. Hefnawy worked as Researcher, Food Scientist, and Director in the area of R&D and Operations in Egyptian and US Companies. His duties included managing development of new food products from the idea stage to full commercialization. He is a leader for developing new products, such as pasta, nuts, dressing, dry mixes, confectionery, thermally processed foods, nutritional drinks, frozen foods, snacks and packaging. Dr. Hefnawy has developed more than 37 new nutritional food products.

This course will discuss both materials and machinery intended to fabricate the retort pouch. Dr. Stern will discuss both commercial and military applications, as well as, the many features available for the retort pouch — easy tear, laser scoring and spout technology. Dr. Rani Stern
Dr. Stern is married with three children and three grandchildren. He lives in Kibbutz Sde Yoav. Dr. Stern’s skills and experience include a long time worldwide experience in high performance laminates and pouches, including retort and laser scoring.

Dr. Stern served for many years as the CTO and CEO of CLP Ind., which is a well-known worldwide leader in retort pouches. Dr. Stern also served as a senior lecturer for packaging in the plastic engineering department at Shankar College. He presented some of the innovations in conferences held in the USA, Holland and Germany.

He is an inventor of several patents in retort pouches and laser scoring. At present, he is a worldwide consultant for high performance flexible packaging.
